Pipe & Cisterns

Formulae:
If a tank is filled by one pipe in “a” hours and “b” hours by second pipe, then time taken to fill the tank when both the pipe working together
= (ab)/(a + b).
If a tank is filled by one pipe in “a” hours and “b” hours by second pipe to empty the tank , then time taken to fill the tank when both the pipe working together = (ab)/(a – b).

Example :
Two pipes A and B can fill a cistern in 20 and 30 minutes respectively. If both the pipes are opened together, how long will it take to fill the cistern?

Explanation :
Let’s say x = 20 and y = 30
=(xy/(x+y))
=((20*30)/(20+30))
=12min
So it will take 12 minutes for both the pipes to fill the cistern.
