Dipa Karmakar Selected As Barbie Role Model

Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian female gymnast to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Karmakar did India proud by winning a bronze medal.

So, this year on Barbie’s 60th anniversary, Mattel in an effort to honor female role models in their respective fields, launched a Dipa Karmakar-inspired Barbie.

The ‘Dipa Karmakar’ Barbie doll dons a red full-sleeve leotard and a bronze medal. The 25-year-old Indian gymnast has won 77 medals including 67 gold in state, national and international championships and in July 2018, Karmakar became the first Indian gymnast to win a gold medal at a global event, when she finished first in the vault event of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey.

Dipa Karmakar was the iconic global brand for their ‘role model’ campaign to mark the 60th anniversary of Barbie. She has been chosen along with 19 other successful women from 17 countries to be included in the collection of Barbie dolls inspired by real-life heroes.
